Video Blogging Compared To TV Recording

Interview with Elizabeth Esther

elizabeth estherAs I recorded video for The Relevant Conference this lady was the only one to say yes right away. She actually said yes before I explained the question! I was amazed! Most attendees I had to coax into doing a video, and give them time to think. Then I found out that Elizabeth Esther is used to doing her own video blogs as well as being on TV. When I heard that I decided to “interview” her. Enjoy! [cause I surely did]

Here’s a list of the tips we talked about:

  1. Sit up straight
  2. Don’t wiggle
  3. Apply lip gloss liberally
  4. Don’t overthink it
  5. Listen well when interviewing
  6. Look at each other when interviewing
  7. When talking to audience look directly into camera
  8. Do vlogs to help yourself become comfortable before going on TV ;)
  9. Try to keep to 2 min. or less [please excuse that this one is longer]
  10. Really be yourself [only copy Elizabeth Esther]
  11. It takes time to figure out your online presence; it’s ok to experiment

P.S. I picked that picture of Elizabeth Esther from her site because I think it makes her look like Judy Garland – a young Judy Garland, of course.

P.P.S. Next time we should totally sing Broadway tunes together!

How To Record The Best Video Interview

How To Be A Good Interviewer

-

Listen! Listening is the key to any good interview whether it be audio or video. I can detect in audio interviews whether the interviewer is really listening or checking their email. On video it will be apparent whether you are listening intently or not. Be focused and alert.

Plan ahead of time.

  • 1. Questions – is there something the guest would like you to ask them about?
  • 2. Location – will it be quiet around you? Turn off your tweetdeck beeps!
  • 3. Background – do you need to angle your webcam a different way? Will something behind the guest give them authority or make them look funny?
  • 4. Lighting – is there light on your face and your guest’s face, not just behind you?
  • 5. Clothes – it might be okay to just dress up on the top half, but be very careful. You only get one shot at the interview and you don’t want to accidently show your pajamas.

Frame

  • If your interview is through webcam you will want the basic head and shoulders shot. Look at the camera for the majority of the time instead of the screen.
  • If you are doing the interview live and you are lucky enough to have a camera person ask them to zoom in on the guest for a bit before going back out to include both of you in the screen.
  • For the introduction you will want to look at your audience, in other words – the camera. During the meat of the interview you will look at each other because you are listening, remember? It is nicer to stand at a slight angle so the camera sees both eyes instead of just one. At the end, ask the guest to tell the audience [the camera] their information.

Know this: You can’t always control the environment around an interview. Sometimes you just need to record when you get the chance. When I filmed the interview with Janice and Kevin Carroll it was spur of the moment with a camera I pulled out of my bag. I couldn’t do anything about lights or background noise. I don’t regret doing it at all.

I Filmed An Interview With Kevin Carroll

Kevin Carroll spoke during the opening session of Blissdom 2010. He is a dynamic speaker as well as the author of the Red Rubber Ball series. His energy level was amazing!

The ironic thing about me having this video is that I didn’t even get to hear Kevin Carroll”s speech because I was working at the Blissdom registration desk. BUT if I hadn’t been at the registration desk I would not have met Janice from 5 minutes for mom right away. I would not have sat at a table with her, and then waited [and waited] till she finished some online business and we were the last 2 bloggers to leave. I would not have been there when the amazing Kevin Carroll started a conversation with us. I would not have had the guts to ask, “Can I record a video of you?” After all, he was encouraging me to follow my passion and I love making videos!

On my YouTube channel is a short clip of when I first met Janice. Maybe next time I’ll think more about what I’m going to say before I start recording. I was just so-o excited!

Spotlight On A Vlogger: Sarah From Real Life

Sarah and I started making vlogs at about the same time. Because of our videos we were able to recognize each other right away when we met at a a conference.  Even though we both love to make videos we were a bit nervous about the interview until we saw each other – then we just chatted away!

You’ll want to listen to the interview because she includes some great tips towards the end.

Sarah is super busy online – as you can hear when she introduces herself, but her two main sites are SarahPinnix.net and Reallifeblog.net.  You can also catch her every Thursday at 1pm EST live on MomTV.

You can try to keep up with Sarah on Twitter and friend her on MomTV.

Spotlight On A Vlogger: Yoly from Cuponeando

Yoly has only been making vlogs for a month or two. In that short amount of time she has become so much more comfortable with making videos.  She even has a live show on MomTV!

Her site - Cuponeando.net – is about deals, coupons, and much more.  In the interview she tells why she started a Spanish site. Don’t worry if you can’t read Spanish – you can still visit her site; there is a translate button on the bottom of the web page.

If you want to find out more about her daily life and watch her vlogs visit Cuponeando Live. You can follow Yoly on Twitter and friend her on MomTV.

This is the first interview of what I hope will be many.  It was so-o fun!
