Maria graciously answered these questions in February 2010. She has done even more with video since then and has even more videocentric plans in the works.
1. Would you tell us a little bit about you and what you do online?
I’ve been online for over a decade! Long before blogging or podcasting existed.
I’m the founder of Blue Suit Mom, BSMmedia, host of MomTalk Radio, co-founder of MomTV.com, founder of Mom Select and She Streams Conference; and author of several books including the most recent Power Moms.
2. When and why did you start vlogging/making videos?
I started in 2008 with the launch of Newbaby.com. I felt that video was going to be the next big thing online because it puts a face to the moms that socialize with each other. Additionally I think video is the perfect way to talk to moms because a mom can listen to a video while cooking chicken tenders to get quick answers to questions she might have. Technology has now made video so easy and adds a whole new dimension to communicating, informing and socializing online.
3. Can you tell us a specific instance when video helped your online business grow?
Oh, wow, there are so many. Frequently a brand manager has seen me on video and called to hire me as a spokesperson for their product. Additionally, I’ve had companies pay me to record videos of product reviews.
4. What do you see happening in the future with video and women bloggers?
I think moms will use video to become self broadcasters either establishing online television shows on Mom TV or YouTube channels and build followers that enjoy seeing the content they would have once put on their blog. I also see more moms using video to share every day special occasions in the life of their kids.
5. Do you have a simple tip or tips for a brand new vlogger?
Find a topic that’s interesting to you and something you are passionate about and just start talking. Remember that moms are looking for quick easy solutions. I would keep your videos to 3-5 minutes. If you do an online webcast, you can get away with 20-30 minutes.
Thank you Maria! And honestly readers – Maria’s advice has never steered me wrong.
